Spring 2021: Student Organizations Facilities Update

Wednesday, Dec 2, 2020

As we draw the semester to a close, know that all of us in ODUS are cheering you on and that each of you has been sorely missed. In preparing for the return of undergraduates to campus this January, I write with an important update regarding student organization spaces managed by ODUS for spring 2021.

Much like the fall, student group facilities continue to pose a unique set of challenges. By design, these indoor spaces are meant for communal use, often with shared equipment, and accessible around the clock. At the same time, University policy, as outlined in the Social Contract, restricts student organization in-person events. For these reasons, the opening of these spaces continues to be impractical, at least under current public health guidelines.

For spring 2021, all student organization facilities will remain closed for individual and student group use until further notice. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

 Practice and rehearsal rooms

  • Student group offices
  • Theaters and prop rooms
  • Storage and costume closets
  • Recording and media editing studios
  • Whig Hall
  • Campus Club
  • Student Publications Center at 48 University Place
  • Outdoor Action Climbing Wall and Equipment Room

Prox access to these facilities is expected to remain inactive for the duration of spring term. However, ODUS will continue to closely monitor University policy and public health guidelines, including state regulations for New Jersey. Should the situation allow, ODUS will revisit opportunities for access to student organization spaces, where appropriate, and communicate a reopening plan.

In the interim, and in exceptional cases only, student groups may request a temporary, one-time entry to their space, such as to retrieve a critical piece of equipment. To do so, an officer of the group will need to complete this form a minimum of five (5) business days in advance, detailing the nature of the request. If approved, an ODUS staff member will be in touch to make arrangements to meet on-site with an officer of the student organization. We expect the majority of requests should come the first two weeks of spring term.

As you prepare for final exams and a much-deserved Winter Break, remember, ODUS is here for you and we’re in this together. Through it all, we stand ready to support you, your student organization, and Old Nassau.
