Welcome Class of 2022!

Monday, Jun 11, 2018

“We can’t wait to meet you” was the sentiment surrounding the creation of a music video welcoming the Princeton University Class of 2022, released earlier today by the Orientation Leaders and the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS) on the Class of 2022 Facebook page and Orientation website. The video is also available on the ODUS Facebook and YouTube Channel.

The idea was conceived by the Orientation Leaders, a group of upper-class student volunteers tasked with welcoming the class of incoming first-year students through community building and social programming. During an icebreaker that launched an impromptu Taylor Swift dance competition, the song “22” started to play, and the idea was born.

Welcoming the Class of 2022 with a Princeton version of Swift’s “22” quickly became a running joke among the Orientation Leaders. Before long, the idea transformed from a joke into a realization that a music video could serve as another medium for the Orientation Leaders to welcome the incoming class and “create a sense of community before they even arrive on campus”, as Orientation Leader Co-Chair Evelyn Wu ’19 put it. As one of the leaders of the group, Evelyn wanted “the class of ’22 to know that all of Princeton is excited for the new class and hopes the video will create more excitement for their Princeton experience.”

The only thing holding the Orientation Leaders back from making their ‘22 music video dreams a reality was their lack of trained singing voices, and experience behind the camera. For this, they reached out to the a cappella community, and ODUS Communications Assistant and campus filmmaker Nic Chae ’21, through their connections to ODUS. That was when the project really took off.

Amber Lin ’19 acted as the Music Director, and took the lead writing a basic arrangement and bringing eight different a cappella groups on-board to collaboratively work on the sound and lyrics before recording the music featured in the video. Amber expressed her hope that “this music video shows the upcoming class how Princeton is truly a place of collaboration. We often spend our time interacting in smaller communities - from a cappella groups to dance groups, departments to sports teams - but when asked, these students happily jumped on board to commit their time and energy to a cause they all felt strongly about: welcoming the Class of 2022 to a place that means the world to us.”

As the director, Nic brought the lyrics and sentiment behind the video together, executing a story, concept, and vision for the music video, marshaling a small army of volunteers, and editing the content for the production in only a few days. Nic “wanted to incorporate campus culture into as many scenes as possible” and is proud that the video “showcase[d] so much talent and beauty that Princeton’s students and campus have to offer.”

A team of students and staff helped partner to provide music, props, and their acting talents to bring the piece to life. In fact, many of the collaborators involved in the making of the video, including student a capella singers, orientation leaders, and even some ODUS staff members, can be spotted throughout.

Lyrics

[1] It feels like a perfect night to dress up like tigers

[1] And make fun of Harvard, uh uh uh uh

[2] It feels like a perfect night for late meal and p-sets

[2] And then dance at eating clubs, uh uh uh uh

[3/4] Yeah

[3] We're happy, free, confused and learning at the same time

[3/4] It's orange, black, and magical oh yeah

[4] Tonight's the night when we forget about the deadlines, it's time uh oh

[5] We wanna welcome you, the great class of ’22

[5] We felt like you do now---, when we were in your shoes

[6] We don’t know about you, but we sure want to

[6] Everything will be alright, if we just keep dancing like we're ’22, 2022

[7] It seems like one of those nights

[7] Prospect’s too crowded, so many shows to see uh oh, uh oh

[8] It seems like one of those nights

[8] We ditch the whole street and end up eatin’ our HOAGIE HAVEN!

[9/10] Yeah

[9] We're happy, free, confused and learning at the same time

[9/10] It's orange, black, and magical oh yeah

[10] Tonight's the night, when we forget about the deadlines, it's time uh oh

[11] We wanna welcome you, great class of ’22

[11] We felt like you do right, when we were in your shoes

[12] We don’t know about you, but we sure want to

[12] Everything will be alright, if we just keep dancing like we're ’22, 2022

[13] It feels like one of those nights uh uh

[13] We walk to Wa-wa

[14] It feels like one of those nights uh uh

[14] Sing A cappell-ah

[15] It feels like one of those nights uh uh

[15] You are the best newbs

We gotta have you

[Everyone] We’re glad to have you!
